Is there any link out there on the need to setup an environment ? I know its
needed, just looking to find some official link
Also how do you sync up production databases to these environments ? Do you
do it daily ? backup and restore ?
You do not need to restore the database daily or too often. It depends on
how updated data the developers require. Be careful if you have done schema
changes to the development database and you restore a new copy.
Use the backups that you do on the production environment. That will help
you to test your backup and recovery strategy.

Link through 6.5 server to 2000
Is there a way to setup a link through a 6.5 server to a SQL2k database?
Here is our problem: we have a product running on Sun Solaris that connects to a 6.5 database. We upgraded the database to 2k, nad the product can no longer connect - knowledbase for the product suggests setting up a link on 6.5 server to reference teh 2k box (fooling the product into thinking it is still talking to 6.5). Unfortunately, they give no instruction on how to do this. Any ideas?
Craig DolsWhat's the product?
Been a long time since 6.5, but I didn't think (what, again!) that 6.5 had linked servers...
Or it's just that I never needed/ used them...|||The product is Datastage - I know very little about it, I'm just the SQL geek. From what the sysadm is telling me, the version tehy ahve installed does not support SQL2k - and it will be at least a month to get it upgraded - so I need to find a quick temporary fix.|||Never heard of it...
Check out this...

Datastage usese ODBC connections to get data from MS SQL server to and from.. ODBC is MS SQL native driver. Set up two odbc connections on the DATASTAGE server. Then in DS you can pump data back and forth applying all the rulles that you need. The ds website posted above is awsome and will get you all the help you need.

Link Server to SQL2000 from SQL2005 64bit
Hello All,
I setup a link to my SQL2000, everything seem fine except when I try to
query the SQL 2000 database. I get the following error:
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "ces012" returned message
"Unspecified error".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "ces012" returned message "The
stored procedure required to complete this operation could not be found on
the server. Please contact your system administrator.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES_INFO" for OLE DB provider
"SQLNCLI" for linked server "ces012". The provider supports the interface,
but returns a failure code when it is used.
I search on the web and it tells me to run the instcat.sql on the SQL2000
server.
Do you see any problem after I run this script? Are there anyway I can back
out?
Thanks.
It should be no problem, I would take a backup of the Master database first.
You can run the script if you have SP3 or SP4 applied on SQL 2000. You can
restore your master if you want to back out.

Link display in a report
How do I setup a link to only display when data is in the report I’m jumping to.
I don’t want to display the link if I don’t have any rows in the report.
You would probably have to set this up outside of the Report Manager portal, using a custom interface.
You may be able to get away with running a custom script that would query for the existence of data, and toggle security for individual reports that have no data.
This scripting tool may help with this task.

Limiting traces in Profiler
I've opened a trace in Profile, and now want to limit the results based on
the TextData field. I've setup a filter for "textdata not like exec
some_existing_sp" and that worked fine.
How is a "or" added here, if possible?
I'd like a filter something like "textdata not like (exec some_existing_sp)
or (exec some_existing_sp2)".
Or and "()" don't seem to work though.
Marco
Close and expand the 'NOT LIKE' and you should get another input box.
